Cerro Perito Moreno, El Bolson: The Laid-Back Local's Mountain
El Bolson's Cerro Perito Moreno is one of the most affordable and least crowded ski resorts in Patagonia -- a favourite of Argentine locals and almost unknown to international visitors.
About 130 km south of Bariloche, the small hippie town of El Bolson sits in a fertile valley surrounded by mountains. Most people know it for its famous artisan market and organic farms. What they don't know is that the ski resort above town -- Cerro Perito Moreno -- is one of the most authentic and affordable ski experiences in Argentina.
We include Perito Moreno in itineraries for guests who want something genuinely off the beaten path. Here's what to expect.
Where Is Cerro Perito Moreno?
Cerro Perito Moreno (not to be confused with the Perito Moreno glacier in Santa Cruz province) sits about 25 km northwest of El Bolson. The town itself is roughly a 2-hour drive south of Bariloche along Route 40, or about 130 km. The approach road to the resort climbs through native forest before opening up to alpine terrain with views across the valley to Lago Puelo.
From Bariloche, the drive is straightforward on paved roads. We can arrange transfers as part of a multi-resort itinerary -- Perito Moreno works well as a day trip from Bariloche or a 2-day addition to a Lake District loop.
The Skiing
Perito Moreno is small by international standards: about 20 runs served by a handful of lifts, with a vertical drop of around 700 metres. The top elevation reaches roughly 2,000 metres. But what the resort lacks in scale it makes up for in character.
The terrain is roughly 40% beginner, 35% intermediate, and 25% advanced. Tree skiing through lenga forest is excellent on the lower slopes, and the upper mountain opens up to bowls and chutes that see very few tracks. On a powder day here, you can find untracked snow hours after a storm -- something that's increasingly rare at Catedral or Chapelco.
The snow quality is generally good thanks to the elevation and southern exposure, though the resort can be affected by Patagonian wind -- check the forecast before making the drive.
El Bolson: The Town
El Bolson has a completely different vibe from Bariloche or San Martin. It's a small, artsy community that declared itself a nuclear-free zone in the 1980s and has been attracting artists, organic farmers, and outdoor enthusiasts ever since. The famous Feria Artesanal (artisan market) runs on Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Saturdays and sells everything from handmade jewellery to local honey, smoked trout, and craft beer.
The craft beer scene here rivals Bariloche's, with breweries like El Bolson Brewery (one of Patagonia's oldest) producing excellent ales from local hops. The valley is actually one of Argentina's main hop-growing regions, so the beer is genuinely local.
For food, El Bolson is known for its organic produce, wood-fired bread, berry farms, and trout. Restaurants are casual and affordable -- you won't find the white-tablecloth dining of Bariloche's best restaurants, but you will eat incredibly well for very little money.
What It Costs
Perito Moreno is one of the cheapest ski resorts in Argentina. Lift passes typically cost USD 20-30 per day -- roughly half the price of Catedral. Accommodation in El Bolson starts from USD 40-50 per night for a comfortable cabin or hostel. A full day of skiing including lunch on the mountain can cost under USD 60, which is remarkable value.

Who Should Ski Here?
Perito Moreno is best suited to intermediate skiers and families who want a relaxed, affordable experience without the crowds. It's also a strong pick for skiers who care as much about the town and culture as the slopes -- El Bolson's markets, breweries, and hiking trails offer plenty for non-skiing days or non-skiing travel companions.
Advanced skiers looking for steep terrain or extensive off-piste will be better served at Las Lenas or Catedral's backcountry zones. But as a 1-2 day addition to a broader Patagonia trip, Perito Moreno adds something no other resort offers: the authentic, unhurried Argentina that most tourists never see.
How to Include It in Your Trip
The easiest way to ski Perito Moreno is as part of a multi-resort itinerary. Spend your main days at Catedral or Chapelco, then add 1-2 nights in El Bolson for a change of pace. The drive south from Bariloche along Route 40 passes through gorgeous steppe and forest scenery, and the town itself is worth an afternoon of exploring even without skiing.
We build custom itineraries that combine Perito Moreno with other Lake District resorts -- including transfers, accommodation, and local recommendations. Let us know your dates and we'll put together a plan.
