Cerro Chapelco vs Cerro Catedral: Which Resort Is Right for You?
Two of Patagonia's best ski resorts, two very different experiences. Here is an honest side-by-side comparison to help you choose or convince you to ski both.
If you are planning a ski trip to Patagonia, two resorts will come up in every conversation: Cerro Catedral near Bariloche, and Cerro Chapelco near San Martín de los Andes. Both are excellent. Both deserve your time. But they are fundamentally different mountains — and choosing the right one depends on what kind of ski trip you want.
Here is an honest comparison.
Size and terrain
Cerro Catedral is Argentina's largest ski resort. It covers 1,200 hectares of skiable terrain with 72 marked runs, a summit at 2,388 metres, and over 1,000 metres of vertical drop. The terrain is genuinely varied: wide groomed boulevards for intermediates, steep chutes for experts, and some of South America's best tree skiing in the lenga beech forests on the lower mountain.
Chapelco is smaller — roughly 140 hectares with 29 runs and 730 metres of vertical. But smaller does not mean lesser. The terrain is well-designed, the fall line is consistent, and the snow quality is often better than Catedral because Chapelco faces south and sits at a slightly higher base elevation.
Snow and conditions
Chapelco tends to hold its snow better. The south-facing aspect means less sun exposure, and the resort receives slightly more consistent precipitation than Catedral. On a good day, Chapelco's powder is among the best in Argentina.
Catedral gets more variable conditions. It is bigger and more exposed, which means wind can be a factor. But when Catedral is on, the sheer amount of terrain means you can always find something worth skiing.
The town
This is where the two diverge most sharply.
Bariloche is a city of 140,000 people. It has world-class restaurants, a famous chocolate scene, a thriving nightlife, and the infrastructure of a proper destination.
San Martín de los Andes is a town of about 40,000. It is quieter, more intimate, and feels more like a mountain village than a city. If you want a ski town that feels like a ski town, San Martín wins.
Who should ski where?
Choose Catedral if you:
- Want the biggest ski area in Argentina
- Are a mixed-ability group
- Want a vibrant town with nightlife and restaurants
- Are travelling with a family with children
Choose Chapelco if you:
- Prefer a quieter, more intimate mountain
- Value snow quality over resort size
- Are looking for off-piste and backcountry terrain
- Have already skied Catedral and want somewhere new
Or ski both
The drive from Bariloche to San Martín takes about three hours along the famous Seven Lakes Route. Many of our group trips include days at both resorts.
If you have a full week, we recommend four days at Catedral and two at Chapelco.
The bottom line
Catedral is the mountain for scale and variety. Chapelco is the mountain for quality snow and village feel. Both are exceptional.
