Heli-Skiing in the Andes: What to Expect, What It Costs, Who It's For
Heli-skiing in Patagonia is not like heli-skiing anywhere else. Here is what a day actually looks like, what it costs, and whether it is right for you.
Heli-skiing in the Andes is one of those experiences that sounds like marketing until you actually do it. Then it becomes the thing you measure every other ski day against.
What a day looks like
You wake up early at a mountain lodge outside Bariloche. After breakfast and a safety briefing, you drive to the helipad. The helicopter takes your group — typically four to six skiers plus an IFMGA-certified guide — to a ridgeline above 2,000 metres.
The engine cuts, the rotors slow, and the silence hits you. You are standing on a ridge with a 360-degree view of the Andes, and there is not a single track in any direction.
Your guide selects a line. You drop in. The descent might be 800 to 1,200 vertical metres through open alpine terrain, volcanic bowls, and into the lenga forests below. At the bottom, the helicopter picks you up and takes you back to the top.
On a good day, you get three to five runs. Patagonian weather is the one variable nobody controls.
What it costs
Our heli-ski packages start from USD 6,500 per person for a four-night trip, including accommodation, all meals, guide fees, helicopter time, and avalanche safety equipment.
That price is significantly lower than comparable operations in British Columbia or Alaska, where a week typically runs USD 10,000 to USD 15,000. The terrain quality is comparable. The crowds are nonexistent.
Who it is for
Heli-skiing in the Andes is for expert skiers comfortable in all conditions — powder, crud, variable snow, and steep terrain. You need a strong parallel turn, good fitness, and the confidence to commit to lines you have never seen before.
If you are unsure whether you are ready, talk to us. We will be honest — and if heli-skiing is not the right fit, we can recommend a guided off-piste program that builds toward it.
Best time to go
July through mid-August offers the most reliable deep snowpack and stable weather windows.
The bottom line
