What to Do When It Rains All Week at Bariloche

Rain at a ski resort is not the trip-ender it sounds like. Here is an honest guide to making the most of bad-weather days in Bariloche -- on and off the mountain.

What to Do When It Rains All Week at Bariloche

Rain at Bariloche during ski season is uncommon but not rare -- the resort averages 8 to 12 rain days per season, mostly in June and early October. When it happens, Cerro Catedral may close its upper lifts or shut entirely. The good news: Bariloche itself is one of the most interesting mountain towns in South America, and a rain day here is genuinely worth having a plan for.

Quick Answer: Rain-day options at Bariloche

    • Resort still open (rain below 1,800 m): ski the lower mountain in light rain -- conditions are often better than expected
    • Resort closed: Bariloche town is 20 km away and fully worth a day
    • Forecast improving: wait it out at the base village, ski the afternoon reopening
    • Multi-day rain event: consider a day trip to El Bolson or Puerto Madryn
    • Budget for rain days: plan at least 1-2 buffer days on any trip of 7+ nights

How often does it actually rain during the Patagonian ski season?

The core ski season -- mid-June through late September -- averages 8 to 12 precipitation days in Bariloche, but not all of these are rain days at resort elevation. Cerro Catedral sits 1,050 to 2,388 metres above sea level. Rain at 800 metres (the town) often falls as snow above 1,400 metres. During a typical Bariloche rain event, the upper mountain may receive 15 to 25 cm of fresh snow while the base village is wet and grey. Some of the best powder days begin as rain days in town.

The riskiest periods for all-resort closures are early June (before the snowpack has built) and September to October (when warm fronts move up from the Pacific). July and August closures due to rain are unusual -- the more common summer threat in peak season is high wind, not rain.

What happens when Cerro Catedral closes for weather?

When Catedral closes due to rain or wind, the resort announces the closure by 8 a.m. via its official website and social channels. Lift passes are credited for the closed day -- you bring your pass to the ticket office within 7 days of the closure and receive a credit for a future day. This policy has been consistent for the past 5 seasons, though always worth confirming at purchase.

The base village at Catedral (Villa Catedral) stays open during closures. Several restaurants, the ski rental shops, and the main lodge remain operational. It is a reasonable place to wait out a short closure, drink coffee, and watch the weather clear.

Is Bariloche worth exploring on a bad weather day?

Yes -- Bariloche is one of the few ski towns in South America with genuine off-mountain depth. The city of 140,000 people sits on the shore of Lago Nahuel Huapi and has a functioning cultural life independent of the ski season.

Top options for a rain day in town:

    1. Museo de la Patagonia -- Natural history and indigenous culture of the Lake District. 2 to 3 hours. Located inside the Civic Centre on Mitre Avenue. Entry approximately $3 USD.

    2. Chocolate circuit -- Bariloche has 50+ artisan chocolate shops. Rapa Nui and Mamuschka are the most acclaimed. A full circuit takes 2 to 3 hours and costs as much as you choose.

    3. Craft brewery tour -- Bariloche has a serious craft beer scene. Cerveceria Patagonia, Antares, and Otto Tipp are all within walking distance of the city centre.

    4. Llao Llao Hotel -- The iconic 1938 lake-view hotel, 25 km from town, is open to non-guests for lunch and afternoon tea. A taxi costs approximately $12 USD each way.

    5. Mercado Municipal -- Covered market with smoked meats, regional cheeses, dried fruit, and local produce. Good for picnic supplies and food gifts.

Should you ski in light rain at Catedral?

Yes, if the resort is open and the rain is light. Skiing in light rain is less miserable than it sounds, especially in the lower mountain tree zones where shelter cuts the wind and the rain feels lighter. Pack a waterproof shell and waterproof gloves. Goggles rather than sunglasses. Keep a dry base layer in your bag at the resort.

Light rain at resort elevation often signals softening snow below it -- corn snow in spring and wet powder in winter. The mountain thins out quickly on rain days, so lift queues disappear. Some of the least-crowded, most enjoyable resort days I have had in Patagonia were in drizzle with zero lift queue.

How do you plan for rain days before the trip?

Build buffer days into the itinerary. On a 7-night trip, plan 5 committed ski days and leave 2 flexible -- if the weather cooperates, you ski all 7. If 2 days rain out, you have not lost your core skiing. Book accommodation that is comfortable enough to enjoy on a non-skiing day.

Also consider travel insurance with weather delay coverage. If a resort closes for more than 2 consecutive days and you miss significant skiing, some policies reimburse the unused lift pass costs. Read the fine print before buying.

    Frequently Asked Questions

Does Cerro Catedral refund lift passes for weather closures?

Catedral credits -- not refunds -- lift passes for days when the resort closes due to weather. The credit must be used within the same season. Check the current policy with the ticket office at purchase, as the exact terms vary by pass type.

What is the weather forecast tool for Bariloche ski season?

The most reliable source is Meteored.ar (the Argentine national weather service), combined with the Catedral resort website for lift status. Local guide services also post morning conditions -- Ski Patagonia Co. sends condition reports to guests each morning during their trip. You can also contact our team for real-time conditions during your stay.

Is it possible to drive to another resort on a rain day?

Cerro Chapelco (San Martin de los Andes) is 160 km north of Bariloche -- roughly 2 hours by car. If Catedral closes but conditions are better at Chapelco, the drive is feasible as a day trip. Check our Chapelco vs Catedral guide for a full comparison of the two resorts.

Are there ski alternatives in the Bariloche area on a full closure day?

Ski touring above the resort is sometimes possible when the resort itself is closed -- wind or rain at lower elevations does not always affect the backcountry above. This requires a guide, skins, and full avalanche equipment. Our off-piste team can advise on day-by-day backcountry conditions.
